"The power that made the body, heals the body"
- BJ Palmer
Chiropractic is based on the theory that disease is caused by an abnormal function of the nervous system. A chiropractor attempts to restore normal function through manipulation and treatment of the structures of the body, focusing on the nervous system – the brain and spinal cord. When bones of the spine are misaligned, the body cannot function at its fullest potential. The chiropractic approach to health care is holistic, stressing the patient’s overall well being. Doctors of chiropractic trust in the body’s ability to heal itself without the use of surgery or medication.
The practice of spinal manipulation began gaining momentum in the late 19th Century in the United States. Daniel David Palmer founded the Chiropractic profession in Davenport, Iowa, in 1895, and started the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1897.
